The purpose of the Hunter’s Pace is to have a competitive event approximating the condition of the hunt field and to test the rider’s judgment of “hunting pace” over fair hunt country. The course will be marked with colored markers. It will be approximately 4 – 5 miles long, and run over beautiful rolling fields and autumn woods. The “ideal” time is the goal. The time is set by the Jt. Masters
HUNTER’S PACE OVER FENCES
Contestants will be sent off as pairs or groups at 3-minute intervals, over a course of 10 + fences. The fences are 3’ or smaller. The course will be well marked and maps will be available upon arrival. A challenge trophy and eight ribbons will be awarded based on the completion time closest to the time ridden by the Joint Masters.
HUNTER’S PACE ON THE FLAT
Contestants will be sent off as pairs or families at 3-minute intervals, on a course that closely matches the Pace Over Fences, but without jumps. The course will be well marked and maps will be available upon arrival. A trophy and eight ribbons will be awarded based on the completion time closest to the time ridden by the Joint Masters.
THIRD FIELD (ON THE FLAT)
This field is for groups with young riders or inexperienced horses who would like to ride a shorter course without jumps. Each group will leave in 3-minute intervals and ride a well-marked course. Maps will be available upon arrival. A trophy and four ribbons will be awarded based on the completion time closest to the time ridden by the Joint Masters.

Long Lake Hounds Mock Hunt - June 9

LONG LAKE HOUNDS MOCK HUNT

Saturday, June 9, 2012 11:00 a.m.

Whitney Woods, Independence, MN 55359
Pioneer Creek Road (East side near Turner Rd.)
Call the LLH Hotline for directions (952) 473-1303

WHAT is a Mock Hunt? It  is a trail ride through a magnificent piece of property lasting approximately 90 minutes (it includes crossing a stream).

HOW does it work? Several riders (who know the woods) start out and drop popcorn along the path, as if they were a fox leaving a scent path; (the birds pick up the popcorn after we are gone and love us for leaving it). The next group of riders are the hounds and they look for the popcorn and when they see it, bark like hounds. Staff follows and blows a “horn” to signal the hounds. The next group of riders follow the “hounds” at a slower pace. This group is divided into those who wish to trot and canter and those who wish to trot and walk. Each group has a leader who is familiar with the woods. The pace of each group is determined by the competency of horse and rider. Safety is the number one emphasis.

WHERE is Whitney Woods? It is located off Hwy 12 near the Maple Plain Polo Field on the corner of Turner Rd. and Pioneer Creek Rd. It is a 400 acre woods with trails throughout.  Parking will be along Pioneer Creek Rd. Use 7305 Pioneer Creek Rd., 55359 for MapQuest
Go west on Hwy 12 through Maple Plain to County Rd. 90 and turn left. Continue to Turner Rd. and turn right. Continue to Pioneer Creek Rd. and turn right. Proceed until you see trailers parked along the right side of the road.

HOW MUCH does it cost?  Pony Clubbers and kids are free of charge. Adults are asked to contribute $10 for refreshments with the remainder going to the Kennel Fund to feed the hounds.

WILL THERE BE DOGS AT THIS EVENT?  There will be no foxhounds at this event. This is only a trail ride and not a hunt.

Liability Waivers will be required
